Top Mistakes Women Make While Applying Makeup

Thank you for allowing me to SHARE what I have learned over the last 10 months while sharing LimeLight by Alcone Beauty Brand with my customers and friends. XO Jana Jana Clinton Beauty Guide LimeLight by Alcone

In General: The most common mistakes women make when applying makeup are not applying it in the proper light (use a natural light or a lighted makeup mirror) and not using their hands as blending tools, along with good vegan synthetic brushes (that you can use in wax and powder, and only purchase once.)

  1. Not Following a Good Skincare Regime: The best makeup in the world can’t make up for neglected skin. How you prep your skin makes all the difference in how your skin transforms with makeup. Unfortunately, so many of us make the same mistake of applying makeup onto dry skin. Foundation set on dry skin will cause it to flake and will not be able to blend in, instead sitting on top where it looks like you have caked the makeup on. Exfoliate, moisturize and then apply the makeup for best results.
  2. Brow’s – Don’t skimp out on your Brows. Why do we avoid them like we do! Most of us have over plucked our brows that they no longer grow in a shape that is flattering. We have a beautiful eye shadow that allows for a natural look and the top color is #40. It’s a perfect way to have a soft brow look. Shop here
  3. Wearing the wrong foundation color…This is a good rule to follow that foundation isn’t a bronzer. It’s not designed to change the color of the skin, only to match your skin tone perfectly for that natural glowing look. We don’t want to see our foundation. Tip: Use a translucent no-color powder to seal in the foundation so that it keeps looking fresh throughout the day. No touch up’s and also I always suggest our finishing sprays (10 years younger). Lasts 16 hours! Most women choose too light (a pale) color. Always blend down so that you ensure your face is the same shade as your body as seen on your neck.  If you would like to take our foundation color quiz here then text me the color and we will make the decision together on the perfect foundation match for you.
  4. Blending is critical to the application. Without blending makeup properly, it’s not going to look natural. This applies to foundation, blush, and eyeshadow, which all need to be blended in a smooth and seamless way. The right tools make this much easier to do. It’s well worth it to invest in an assortment of makeup brushes, and our line carries vegan synthetic brushes (new launch November 15th). Keeping your brushes clean and free from bacteria also improves your finish.
  5. Too much BRONZER. We all love our bronzers! It’s nice for skin to have a healthy glow and the right bronzer can make that happen. However, it’s easy to go too far with bronzer. I have to admit I was using my bronzer all over and even as my blush. Now I know bronzer is best used for contour building the cheek bone, along the hairline, under the chin (remove chins) and under the jaw line.
  6. Mascara – spend time applying especially with our fiber building mascara. As you choose your look from a light natural look to a bold look it all comes down to how much time you spend on applying. Our fiber building mascara is a good example of building the product on your lashes. Also all beauty consultants say to curl your lashes… Don’t miss that step!
  7. Too Much Powder… yes we need it so our makeup lasts but too much takes the glow away. An excessive amount of powder can make the skin look dry and unhealthy. Healthy skin has a natural glow to it too, and too much powder can eliminate that glow and produce an unhealthy and unnatural look. I personally use a smaller brush and strategically apply under eye, eye lids, chin, nose and forehead my T Zone. I only use a small amount then I apply our finishing spray. Perfect combination for long wearing and no touch ups. I always use Must Dew (oil) in addition to my moisturizer to give my skin that healthy glowing look, not oily. It’s just right!
  8. Applying too much blush and wrong placement. I was not blending enough, and I was applying too low and too close to my nose. Now, I’m blending a pretty soft color not Bronzer and placing on my upper cheekbone. Instead of the streak, opt for a slight swirling over the apples, coming just a little on the higher side and emphasizing a fuller face.
  9. Lipstick well-known beauty tip for your lips is applying to your lips with a papaw ointment. After a few minutes, apply your lipstick. The added moisture will ensure your lipstick doesn’t wear off right away and that it glides on much more smoothly and evenly. It’s one of my favorite tips. Be careful with wearing too dark a color. If you want to do the wine or berry colors, as they are in especially in fall, go for something sheer, a lip stain instead of a lipstick.
  10. Wearing Concealer why they are so important. Covers age spots, dark circles and can be used for contouring. Apply with an upside down deep triangle under each eye. Ask me for a tutorial. This is a product I can’t live without because of it’s high pigment and I can also use it as a tinted moisturizer with Must Dew or Skin Therapist… Ask me!
  11. You’re Putting on Too Much Black Eyeliner. As I have aged I have had too give up the black eyeliner. When age starts to hit and the wrinkles begin to show, which of course can happen from the ripe age of 20 in the form of laugh lines that only get deeper by the time you’re 25 and then 30, try to stay away from too black eyeliner and eye pencils. Darker, dramatic eyes appeal to us no matter what the age, though the sparser brows and thinner lashes certainly can cause a problem as the overcompensation of black eyeliner can in turn only draw attention to the parts of the eyes that we’d rather be covering up. A gray or brown eyeshadow would have better effect in reality, while liquid liners at this point can look too heavy. So when we are younger, we should opt for the liquid and then when the aging process starts, switch to a soft shadows with its softer edges and easy-to-apply characteristics. Browns, Grays, Olives are great choices and I can show you how to still have a dramatic eye with the right shadows.
  12. Forgetting to stay hydrated… huge difference in how the skin looks when we are drinking good water. Everyone needs 1/2 your weight in ounces in water… You can tell if your skin is hydrated.
  13. Forgetting  Sun Screen – Next Summer we are launching a complete line of Sun Screens…
  14. Forgetting to Exfoliate We need too exfoliate, getting rid of the dead skin cells and leaving only a smooth finish on which to draw out our masterpiece. When your skin is grey it’s time to exfoliate. This process should be done at least once a week, but some oily faces tend to like the 3-4 times a week during the shower regime, with the hot water opening up the pores for a deeper clean and then a cool water splashing to seal the clean in. Try our Skin Polish or Mask of Zen Amazing Products that Exfoliate… Shop
  15. Keeping our Brushes Clean – I now clean my brushes almost daily. Dirty brushes leads too not-so-fresh looks and even major breakouts if you’re not careful. Tons of bacteria can be hiding in your brushes.
  16. Did You Know You Should Be Changing Your Makeup Seasonally? Forget that! Most of us use the same makeup for years on end. It’s prudent to change your mascara every 6 months for sure, but the rest normally lasts a long while.  Make a complimentary appointment for each season and update your look… send email to or and let’s keep you updated and your skin looking beautiful!
  17. Watching a few videos on our Facebook Page is a great way to stay current. I love sharing these tips and techniques and using a pro grade makeup and natural skin care has made all the difference for me and my personal clients.
